| Frequently Asked Questions, continued... Do Mastiffs: ~Drool? Yes. They'll drool when they eat or drink, or want what you're eating or drinking. Most experienced Mastiff owners keep drool towels scattered around the house. If you wipe off the slingers right away, you're less likely to be wiping them off your legs, furniture, walls, etc. If you have a strong aversion to drool, Mastiffs are probably not the breed for you. ~Snore? Yep. Ours all insist on sleeping in our bedroom at night. Needless to say, I wear earplugs to bed. ~Live indoors or outdoors? Mastiffs NEED to live inside with their families. Their emotional development can be stunted if they are deprived of the closeness of being with their family. ~How are Mastiffs with ~Other dogs? Mastiffs are normally friendly towards new dogs, but like any breed, need to be socialized while young. Always introduce new dogs slowly. ~Strangers? A properly socialized Mastiff should be polite, possibly aloof, but eventually friendly towards a stranger, once the dog sees your positive reaction to the stranger. ~Young children? Mastiffs are gentle and protective, providing they have been raised with children and are accustomed to them. Small children should never be allowed to play roughly with a puppy. Mastiffs are a very sensitive breed, and can be permanently traumatized by rough handling. A Mastiff's tail is at face level to small children, so care must be taken to avoid injury to to a child. Care must also be taken to ensure an exuberant Mastiff puppy doesn't knock over a child. ~How long do Mastiffs live? 8-10 yrs is average. ~How much training does a Mastiff need? A Mastiff will be a VERY large adult. He needs to know how to heel, greet someone politely, sit, stay, and come when called, at the least. ~What do I feed my Mastiff puppy? Mastiff puppies grow very quickly. A Mastiff will reach the size he is genetically programmed to reach, whether he gets there fast or slowly. Puppy foods contain too much protein, calories and fat for Mastiff pups, making them to grow too fast and causing joint, ligament and tendon problems. It is important to feed your puppy, as well as your adult, a high quality adult dog food (not puppy food) with a low protein amount and few fillers. Some common Mastiff foods are Canidae, Eagle Pack, Innova, Kirklands and Blue Buffalo. An adult Mastiff normally has a slow metabolism, and will usually eat the same amount as a German Shepherd or similar sized dog. ~What's the difference between a Mastiff and a Bullmastiff? The Mastiff is an ancient British breed and its history can be traced back 2000 years. The Bullmastiff, however, is a relatively recent breed developed from crossing a Mastiff (60%) and Bulldog stock (40%). The Bullmastiff's shorter, more compact, more muscular look, shorter muzzle, higher energy level and greater stubbornness are derived from the Bulldog part of its ancestry. Mastiffs have a mellower, more relaxed temperament, compared to the pushier, more active temperament of the typical Bullmastiff. Mastiff males should be at least 30" and females, 27 1/2" tall at the shoulder, and Bullmastiffs males should be between 25"-27" at the shoulder, females 24"-26". Bullmastiff standard lists males weighing between 100-130 lbs for males, 100-120 for females, while Mastiffs weigh significantly more. ~What is an american mastiff? It is a mutt, and often a dangerous one. Puppymillers tout these crosses of Anatolian Shepherds and Mastiffs as "dry-mouthed, with the temperament of a Mastiff." Unsuspecting and uneducated families buy one of these cute little pups, then are heartbroken a year or two later when it reaches maturity and develops the Anatolian temperament, many times turning on family members. Many am's have severe aggression issues and are euthanized at a young age. Anatolians are aggressive dogs bred to think for themselves and stay aloof, and do not make good family pets. Furthermore, any dog with large flews (the floopy face) will drool. Think of when you go to the dentist and he numbs your cheek. You may drool, because you have no muscle control to stop it. Neither do dogs. PLEASE educate yourself. Never take for granted that someone is being honest. Always research for yourself. |
